Orpheus et Eurydicē
Hymen vōce Orpheī ad nūptiās cum Eurydicē vocātur. Ille deus mātrimōniī adfuit, sed nec verba laeta nec ōmen fēlīx attulit. Fax quam tenuit nūllōs ignēs dedit. Mātrimōnium exitum īnfēlīcem habuit, nam nūptā, Eurydicē, dum per herbās cum turbā comitum ambulat, dente serpentis in pedem receptō, occīdit.
Orpheus, postquam ad superās aurās mortem Eurydicēs satis plōrāvit, ausus est ad Stygem dēscendere et eam inter umbrās invenīre. Proserpinam et Plūtōnem tenentem rēgnum umbrārum adiit et sīc ait: “Ō dī positī sub terrā, nōn hue dēscendī quod Tartarum vidēre dēsīderābam nec canem Cerberum, mōnstrum ingēns, vincere. Causa viae est coniūnx quam serpēns necāvit et crēscentēs annōs abstulit. Cōnātus sum ācre vulnus ferre, sine meā coniuge vīvere, sed Amor vīcit. Hic deus bene nōtus est in ōrā superā; forsitan hīc dē eō audīvistis. Sī fāma rapīnae est vēra, Amor vōs quoque coniūnxit. Ōrō, retexite fāta Eurydicēs. Omnia dēbēmus vōbīs; nōs omnēs ad ūnam fīnem properāmus. Haec est domus ultima; longissima rēgna tenētis. Cum Eurydicē iūstōs annōs ēgerit, vōbīs erit. Poscimus hoc dōnum; sed sī fāta negant veniam prō coniuge, certum est mihi hīc manēre. Gaudēte morte duōrum.”
Eum dīcentem tālia animae exsanguēs audiēbant et lacrimābant. Tantalus undam nōn petīvit; orbis Ixīonis stupuit; Sīsyphus in suō saxō sēdit. Eumenidēs quidem lacrimās nōn retinēbant nec rēx Plūtō nec coniūnx Proserpina eī ōrantī negāre potuērunt; Eurydicēn vocant.
Illa erat inter umbrās recentēs et tardō passū dē vulnere ambulābat. Orpheus gaudēns eam accipit sed cum hāc lēge Plūtōnis; nōn dēbet respicere Eurydicēn dōnec ingentem spēluncam Avēnum exierit; aut dōnum erit vānum.
Arduum et obscūrum et ācre erat iter eōrum per mūta silentia. Summā spēluncā nōn procul āfuit. Orpheus timēns et avidus magnopere respicere dēsīderābat; amāns oculōs revertit et prōtinus illa relāpsa est. Bracchia tendēns et certāns eam prehendere, nīl nisi aurās īnfēlīx tenuit. Dēscendēns iterum illa dīxit suprēmum “valē” quod iam vix auribus Orpheus accēpit, et Eurydicē rūrsus eōdem reversā est.
Orpheus geminā morte coniugis stupuit. Charōn eum frūstrā ōrantem et flūmen Stygem iterum trānsīre dēsīderantem prohibuit. Septem diēs tamen ille sēdit in rīpā sine cibō. Lacrimae dolorque fuērunt cibus animī. Deinde dīcēns deōs esse crūdēlēs, sē domum recēpit, et numquam posteā amōrem fēminārum aliārum petīvit.
